Control typography and reusable styles

Format characters and paragraphs, then reuse consistent styling throughout the document.

Applies to Design 0.8.0 on doc.et.

Use styles for repeated content#

Character formatting controls the appearance of selected text, while paragraph formatting controls the structure of the paragraph. Use the Character and Paragraph controls for local changes, then create reusable paragraph and character styles for recurring headings, body text and captions. Updating a style is more manageable than changing many unrelated text selections.

The style system supports reusable formatting and local overrides. Inspect an override before clearing it: it may be an intentional emphasis rather than an error. Find/Change helps revise text, and Find/Replace Font helps identify and replace fonts used by the document. The browser relies on bundled fonts and cannot be treated as a desktop font activation service.

  1. Format a representative heading and body paragraph.
  2. Create or apply reusable paragraph and character styles.
  3. Review local overrides and check text flow after style changes.

Language and composition need review#

Text controls include language-sensitive typography and features such as paragraph rules, list formatting and glyph insertion. Advanced typography can change line breaks and page count. Hyphenation and spelling coverage are limited, and imported text may compose differently from its source application. Inspect multilingual text, line endings and overset after font or language changes. Never assume that a visible font name guarantees the same font file is available in the browser.
