Create, open and save page layouts

Set up a document and understand browser opening, placing and saving.

Applies to Design 0.8.0 on doc.et.

Start with the document geometry#

Use New Document to define the page layout before adding content. Page size, orientation, facing pages, margins, columns and bleed establish the space in which the design will work. These choices matter for a flyer as well as a longer publication: a print document needs an appropriate trim size and bleed, while screen reading may favor a different page shape.

Open accepts native .designcraft files and IDML packages. Place adds content to an existing layout rather than opening it as the active document. The browser Place picker includes images, PDF and AI graphics, text documents and spreadsheet content. Import warnings should be read before continuing, since an imported document can contain elements that are not reproduced exactly.

  1. Create a document and set its page dimensions and margins.
  2. Use Open for an existing layout or Place for content to add to the active document.
  3. Save a native copy to your browser downloads.

Keep a working copy#

Save and Save As download the native document in the browser. They do not overwrite the source file automatically. Keep native copies as you work, then export a separate PDF or exchange document. Desktop folder packaging and file-based book workflows are not equivalent browser download operations.
