Build tables and structured publication content

Use tables, notes, cross-references and generated navigation inside page layouts.

Applies to Design 0.8.0 on doc.et.

Tables within a story#

Create Table starts with body rows, header/footer rows and columns. Tables belong within text flow, so both the table geometry and the surrounding frame influence the final page. Use the Table panel to adjust row and column dimensions and cell formatting. Review cell content after narrowing a column or changing a style, since dense tables can become difficult to read or overflow.

Text placement includes supported Word, RTF, plain text and Markdown content, while the browser picker also accepts XLSX. Import is a starting point for layout, not a guarantee that the source application’s styles and geometry match exactly. Inspect imported material before building repeated publication structure around it.

  1. Create or select a text frame for tabular content.
  2. Insert a table with the required row and column structure.
  3. Enter content, adjust cell formatting and inspect the table in its page context.

Navigation for longer documents#

Footnotes, endnotes, cross-references, text variables, a table of contents and index commands provide building blocks for longer publications. Use structured headings consistently before generating navigation, and update generated content after pagination changes. The desktop book system also has multi-file features, but those filesystem-dependent chapter workflows are not documented here as browser functionality. A single browser document is the practical scope for these guides.
