Create and format tables

Organise structured information with editable rows, columns and cell formatting.

Applies to Word 0.7.0 on doc.et.

What you can do#

Insert a table when information belongs in rows and columns, such as a schedule, comparison or short budget. Table controls let you insert or delete rows and columns, merge or split cells and change the dimensions. The table context menu follows the selected cell or group of cells.

Table Design handles visual treatments while Table Layout handles structure and alignment. Borders and shading help separate headings from data. AutoFit and distribution controls are useful when columns have different amounts of content. On-page handles and ruler markers provide another way to adjust table dimensions.

Try it#

A merged heading can make a table easier to read, but excessive merging can make later editing harder. Finish the basic row and column structure first. After resizing, check wrapped text and page boundaries, especially when exchanging the document with another word processor.

  1. Choose Insert → Table and set the initial rows and columns.
  2. Enter the column headings and data.
  3. Select cells before merging, splitting or changing borders.
  4. Use AutoFit or distribute controls, then inspect the full table across pages.
