Word feature guide

Pictures, diagrams and equations

Add visual explanations, labelled figures and mathematical content.

Applies to Word 0.7.0 on doc.et.

What you can do#

Insert pictures, shapes, text boxes, charts or SmartArt to explain information that is difficult to express in paragraphs. Picture and object controls adjust placement and size. Text wrapping determines how surrounding paragraphs flow around an object, so inspect both the object and the neighbouring text after moving it.

Word-created charts and SmartArt can be displayed and preserved with limitations; they are not equivalent to graphics created inside this editor. Charts created here have controls for their data, type, title, legend and labels. SmartArt created here offers layouts, a text pane, item editing and colour changes.

Try it#

For an imported document, preserve a separate original before saving. Unsupported chart types may appear as placeholders, and imported charts do not provide embedded-workbook editing. Native Office ink and advanced effects have additional limitations. Check critical illustrations in both the editable file and the PDF.

  1. Insert a picture or shape at the relevant point in the document.
  2. Adjust its size and wrapping, then check the surrounding paragraphs.
  3. For a diagram, choose SmartArt and edit the items in its text pane.
  4. Use the equation tools for mathematical expressions and review their exported appearance.
