References and long documents

Maintain contents pages, notes, captions and cross-references.

Applies to Word 0.7.0 on doc.et.

What you can do#

Use heading styles to organise a report before inserting its table of contents. The References commands insert, update or remove the contents list. Updating after significant editing helps keep it aligned with the current document structure. The navigation and outline views make larger documents easier to inspect.

Footnotes and endnotes keep supporting explanations separate from the main narrative. Captions identify figures and tables, while cross-references point readers to named material. Index entries, tables of figures and tables of authorities provide additional ways to organise specialist documents. These are structured features, so refresh their fields after moving or adding content.

Try it#

The built-in source manager is useful for inserting citations, but the upstream implementation records citation sources only for the current session rather than fully preserving the source library in DOCX. Keep your research records separately. Check citation text and bibliography formatting before submission.

  1. Apply heading styles to the document sections.
  2. Choose References → Table of Contents.
  3. Insert notes and captions where supporting information is needed.
  4. Update the contents and reference fields after the final edits.
