Write in Amharic.
Type Ethiopic text with a familiar keyboard, or choose characters on screen.
Phonetic typing
Choose Amharic typing mode in the keyboard control, then focus an editable text area in the editor. Type selam and press Space to enter ሰላም. Consonants are composed as you type: h starts ህ, and adding e changes it to ሀ.
Choose the right sound
Try sh for ሽ, ny for ኝ, and uppercase T for ጥ. The on-screen keyboard shows vowel forms so you can explore a family of characters directly.
Switch between scripts
Use Ctrl + Alt + E or the typing control to switch between Amharic and Latin input. The interface language selector changes menus separately. You can write English in an Amharic interface and Amharic in an English interface.
Use it in the right place
In Word, place the cursor in the document; in Sheets, edit a cell; in Slides or Design, select a text object. In Photo, use a type layer and enable its typing control when entering text, so image-tool shortcuts remain available. Spreadsheet formulas beginning with = remain in Latin input.
Save a copy
Download your file before ending the session. When sharing, check that the receiving application has a font with Ethiopic coverage or use a supported visual export for the intended appearance.
